School Clubs
 

Chess Club
The Chess Club is a group of students meeting once or twice a week to play chess for fun. There is also an opportunity for students to play competitively against students from other schools and in tournaments.

Computer Club
Students who have taken Introduction to Computer Science and are enrolled in computer courses are invited to participate in the three contests held every spring. Those who participate in the contests make up the Computer Club.

Debate
Debate is a co-curricular and extra-curricular activity open to any student in grade nine to twelve. Students will develop critical thinking and formal logic skills while writing and researching topics for argument. All debaters are expected to participate in a predetermined number of local tournaments, while top varsity debaters will be given opportunities to travel to out-of-state tournaments when deemed appropriate. The debate season runs from November to mid-March.

DECA
This organization is open to juniors and seniors enrolled in Marketing I or II, or Fashion Merchandising. District, state, and national marketing competitions are held throughout the school year. The DECA club takes trips to Worlds-of-Fun, Mall-of-America, and a variety of local events. Each activity is on a cost recovery basis. The chapter pays part of state and national costs for qualified competitors.

Diversity Club
Tamales at El Alamo! Student exchanges with other high schools! Diversity Club participates in social activities and provides cultural awareness during ethnic holidays through displays and announcements. This club helps to promote a climate of respect and tolerance for the diversity we find in our student body, staff, and community. All students are invited join!

Drama Club
Drama Club is an activity open to all Millard South students grades 9-12. You do not have to be in a drama class, be a Thespian, or be in a show to be a part of Drama Club. It is a social organization that meets twice a month after school. There are many opportunities for students to learn theatre skills. The club's goal is to unite students interested in theatre. Club activities include socials, dances, theatre games, homecoming, character night, field trips, and discount tickets to area theaters. No fee is required to join, and students in Drama Club may also participate in other school activities.

Environmental Club
"WANTED: People who want to make a difference!" Students for Earth and Animals (SEA) is a civic-minded, student organization focused on improving our planet for all creatures, humans included. Group members raise hundreds of dollars each year for student-selected environmental charities such as: The Nature Conservancy, Defenders of Wildlife, The Humane Society, and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Group members also have the opportunity to educate the Millard South community about the importance of environmental awareness.

FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America)
FCCLA's mission is to promote personal growth and leadership development through Family and Consumer Sciences Education.
Member may participate in district, regional, state and national events in a non-competitive(fun) or competitive way.  The District Leadership conference (in October) is an opportunity to meet students from other chapters in the area and become involved.  The club also sponsors a family during the Christmas season.

Forensics
The MSHS forensics team, made up of students in grades nine to twelve, competes in public speaking, literature interpretation, and group drama events at weekend forensics tournaments held at various area high schools and colleges in the region. Students also have the option to compete in oratorical contests sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. Novices, essentially first year team members, compete in special novice tournaments held locally, while varsity members travel to regional tournaments hosted by high schools and colleges including Bradley University, Hastings College and UNK. Since 1991 Millard South's Forensics squad has produced Omaha's first individual events national champion in more than 40 years, three individual events state champions, the 1997 Class A State Team Championship, and more than a dozen medal winners at state. Team members prepare for competition by taking at least one semester of forensics class, which also satisfies the graduation requirement for oral communications.

National Forensic League
Millard South's NFL chapter is affiliated with the Ripon, Wisconsin based National Forensic League, an organization which honors the top achieving speech and debate students in each high school. Our chapter is one of the largest and most successful in the nation and regularly qualifies students for the NFL's Grand National Tournament each summer. The chapter plans and hosts the annual Squash Fest Speech and Debate Tournament each November as well as smaller novice competitions. Students qualifying for membership in NFL are involved in chapter social events and other projects which promote and spotlight the speech and debate teams on campus.

Spanish Club
Any student who is currently enrolled in a Spanish class is eligible to be a member of Spanish Club. Meetings are held once a month. There may be a minimal fee charged for various activities. The purpose of Spanish Club is to broaden the cultural understanding and awareness of hispanohablantes (speakers of Spanish)! Bienvenidos (Welcome)!

French Club
All French students are invited to participate in the fun and culturally enriching activities of the French Club. French Club activities are held monthly. The cost varies according to the activity. Come join us for food and fete!

German Club
The German Club provides the opportunity to meet other students through cultural and social activities. The club offers at least one activity per month for student participation; including movies, dinners, singing, game nights, bowling tournaments, a German breakfast, a service project for CARE, and more. Activities are announced in German classes. Students may serve on the German Club Board to plan and organize the activities. Millard South German Club members attend the State German Convention each year, often returning with many trophies and medallions. The club also sponsors activities for our exchange students from Dortmund, Germany.

International Thespian Society
Thespians or I.T.S. is an honor society dedicated to recognizing students committed to theatre and to gaining valuable knowledge of the dramatic arts. I.T.S. membership is open to all students. You do not have to be in a drama class or show to become a Thespian; however, applicants must be a member in good standing of Drama Club. Students who wish to join I.T.S. must earn 15 points toward Thespian membership. Each point represents approximately ten hours of service to the theatre.

Lit Club
Lit Club is open to any student 9-12 who is interested in writing, art, graphics, and magazine publication. The club publishes the school's literary magazine each year, selecting from the writing, art, and graphics submitted by students at Millard South, and laying out the magazine using the computer software used by the journalism program. This activity combines writing, art, and journalism and meets on Tuesdays after school.

Math Science Club
The Math Science Club is a group of students meeting once a week to practice for math and science contests held throughout the year. This club is open to any student who enjoys and has a strong interest in math or science. Various math and science topics that are not traditionally shown in regular math and science classes will be taught to students. It is strongly recommended that students have taken Chemistry and/or Algebra II in order to compete.

Mock Trial
Mock trial is open to any junior or senior enrolled in Law Studies, a junior/senior level social studies elective course. Work begins on the case in September and concludes with competition with teams from other schools in November. The project is funded and administered by the Nebraska State Bar Association Foundation. It involves students preparing and arguing a criminal or civil case in Douglas County courtrooms under the supervision of an attorney-coach supplied by the Omaha law firm of Erickson & Sederstrom.

National Honor Society
National Honor Society is an active organization. Members participate in tutoring programs, community projects, career interest mini-sessions, social gatherings, an initiation ceremony, the Mr. Millard South pageant and an auction to raise money for scholarships. Meetings are the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. Candidates eligible for membership must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.25. Membership is then based on service, leadership, and character. Eligible juniors and seniors will be sent an information form at the beginning of each school year. These forms will be completed by the student, returned to the sponsor, and reviewed by a five member faculty council which selects members to be inducted.

New Addition Club
The New Addition Club is open to any nine to twelfth student who is familiar with the Millard South High building, has knowledge about activities, classes, other opportunities at MSHS and who would like to be a "good will" ambassador for our school. Responsibilities include Making new students feel welcome, showing new students around to his/her classes, introducing new students to staff and other students, and eating lunch with new students. The New Addition Club meets the second Wednesday of each month during a different class period each time. Come join and meet new friends.

Newspaper
See your name in print -- become a journalist! The MSHS journalism staff writes and designs monthly print and on-line issues of the school newspaper. All work is produced on Macintosh computers using ClarisWorks, PageMaker, and Photo Shop software. Camp, convention, and competition opportunities are also available. Newspaper class meets during the school day. This course is open to students passing Beginning Journalism with a grade of "3" or higher.

Student Athletic Training
This is a select group of students who assist Millard South's certified athletic trainer with the health care of the many Millard South athletes. These students have completed the Athletic Training and Sports Injury course offered at Millard South. Participants in this course learn basic first aid, CPR, and a variety of athletic training skills necessary for a student athletic trainer. Upon completion of this semester course, students can then go through an application process to become one of our elite group of student trainers.

Yearbook
Help preserve your high school memories--become a journalist! The MSHS yearbook staff writes, designs, and takes photos for the school yearbook. All work is produced on Macintosh computers using Word, PageMaker, and Photoshop software. Camp, convention, and competition opportunities are also available. Yearbook class meets during the school day. This course is open to students passing Beginning Journalism with "3" or higher.

Art club
This organization is open to all high school students, 9-12, whether currently enrolled in an art class or not. Activities and responsibilities of this group include elementary carnival face painting, creating art work for MSHS silent art auctions, field trips, and bi-weekly meetings.
